A Kid Just Like Me

A father & son overcome the challenges of ADD and Learning Disabilities.

Written By: Bruce Roseman, MD
ISBN 0-399-52686-2
$13.95 US, A Perigee Book

I found this to be an extremely engaging book because of the extremely close connection I could feel with the author and his experiences with a life with ADD. Now he is dealing with his son who also has ADD. The parallels of our lives with just that would be enough to have me read this book. But it gets even better as he explores the parallels between his life and that of his son. He discusses the struggle of dealing with the school system while struggling with his own issues, trying not to view the educational system as the enemy.

He hyper-focuses and finds some ways to teach his son and hypothesis that the teachers may be teaching disabled. True to being an ADDer he sees things in a new light. A light that the teachers may not like to see, but he does, it seems help his son.

He discovers how he got through school acquiring another student's notes, as he knew his notes would be at best inadequate. He discovers learning strategies for himself and then applies them to his son. It is a book filled with love and creative problem solving. I highly recommend it to anyone who seeks to truly understand the ADD experience and to any parents of and ADDer.

How Attention Deficit Disorder Originates and What you can do about it
By: Gabor Mate, MD
A Plume book
http://www.pmeguinputnam.com

This book, as the Publishers Weekly states is "one of the most comprehensive and accessible books about Attention Deficit Disorders." His theories of inherited emotional sensitivity dovetail perfectly with my understanding of the true nature of AD/HD and imply naturally the treatment by Medical Hypnoanalysis.

This book is a great find and I highly recommend it to any client who seeks my counsel for these problems

I find this book to be a highly enlightened and useful book for all who would be a parent of a child either labeled ADHD or about to labeled as so. Instead of advocating drugs to merely mask the symptoms they emphasized understanding and acceptance of the "Intense Child." They give good clear examples of how to favorably influence all children especially those who would be considered ADHD.

This work allows me to be a better therapist in my own dealings with anyone who has ADHD as well as being able to recommend it to parents and spouses of ADHD people. I highly recommend this book to all of my clients involved in this area of concern.
